Volunteer

One of the ways we are different to other ESOL providers is the large number of volunteer classroom assistants that we have in our Skills for Life classes. These volunteers support our qualified teachers in delivering the syllabus by helping learners with their course work. However, they also help to provide a welcome, encouraging and social environment in which our learners not only improve their language skills but also their sense of belonging and wellbeing.

At Action Language we have volunteers ranging in age from 18 to 80 years, both qualified teachers and those without any formal qualifications. All that’s required to become a volunteer is a love of working with people and being part of a team, willingness to spend at least a couple of hours a week in one of our classes and a good knowledge of English. If you would like to become involved contact us and we will arrange an informal chat to discuss how best you might become involved.

We are currently recruiting the following volunteers in Newcastle and Sunderland:

ESOL teachers - qualified and experienced teachers (CELTA or equivalent) required to help us develop our work by committing to two hours per week teaching time. Teachers need to share our belief in inclusion and the importance of developing the individual and be willing to take responsibility for presenting lessons.

ESOL teaching assistants - This role is to support our qualified English teachers in the delivery of classes. We aim to have one teaching assistant to three/four learners. Under the direction and guidance of our teachers, you would work alongside our learners in our pre entry Skills for Life classes, helping them to understand and cope with the language teaching as well as encouraging them to join in with the more social aspects of our lessons. Previous experience is not necessary as the teachers leading the classes will take responsibility for teaching materials and organisation.

“At first I had not a very good health history. I had trouble staying in work and I knew going into full time work was not going to be ideal for me. I was put in touch with Action Language and was welcomed straight off the bat. After being interviewed and coming to a few sessions I thought this is the right place for me, I want to be here”.

“I have seen people come to class who started off not very confident and very reticent to talk. Working in a one to one level with them, encouraging them, week by week you see a difference in them. It feels like the person that they actually are is coming out which is a wonderful thing if you’re having a part to play in that. It’s just fantastic!”
